Senior Maya Hawkins scored a team high 17 points to go with seven rebounds and seven assists to lead Rice University to the 2017 WBI Championship today in Houston, TX. The host Owls outlasted UNC Greensboro 74-62 to claim the eighth annual WBI title.
Rice led 18-17 after the first quarter before the visiting Spartans made a run. UNCG outscored Rice 21-12 in the second quarter to take a 38-30 halftime lead. Rice chipped away at the lead before eventually taking control of the game for good late in the third stanza. Rice closed the game out strong to claim the 12-point victory.
Hawkins earned Tournament MVP honors and was joined on the All Tournament Team by teammate Jasmine Goodwin. Freshman guard Nadine Solomon earned All-Tourney accolades along with University of Idaho sophomore Mikayla Ferenz and Milwaukee junior forward Steph Kostowicz.
