Ten teams and three-days of Division I college basketball ended in dramatic fashion on Sunday (Nov. 22) as NC State’s Tracy Smith scored on a put back with three seconds left to give the Wolfpack a 60-58 victory over Auburn in the final game of the 2009 Glenn Wilkes Classic. The NC State-Auburn game was just one of many close games at the third annual event in Daytona Beach, FL.

Thanks in large part to the last second finish over Auburn, NC State claimed the GWC crown with a perfect 4-0 record. The Pack defeated Georgia State, Akron, Austin Peay and Auburn in succession for the title. Two different teams, UCF and IUPUI, finished with 3-1 records while Akron, Auburn, Austin Peay, and Niagara all broke even at 2-2. Georgia State and Drake went 1-3 in the four-game event while Howard University dropped all four of its contests.

In addition to hitting the game winner in what proved to be the championship game win over Auburn, Tracy Smith also earned GWC Most Valuable Player honors due to his four-game performance. Smith was joined on the All-Classic team by fellow Pack teammate Dennis Horner, Dewayne Reed and Frankie Sullivan of Auburn, AJ Rompza and AJ Tyler of UCF, Robert Glenn and Alex Young of IUPUI, Joe Dukes of Georgia State, Drake’s Ryan Wedel, Austin Peay’s Anthony Campbell, Anthony Hutchins of Akron and Niagara’s Bilal Benn.

The 2009 Glenn Wilkes Classic set attendance records in its third year while continuing to provide competitive, nuetral site games at the Division I men’s level. Please check www.glennwilkesclassic.com for more information, future schedules, and photos.
