Big East Schools Each Win Twice In Cancun - 12/1/2009

Syracuse University and the University of Louisville each posted 2-0 records in the five-team 2009 Cancun Thanksgiving Classic which concluded on Sunday (Nov. 29). The second-year event took place over three days during the Thanksgiving Holiday in the resort Mexican city.

Syracuse opened up Classic play with a 65-32 victory over Old Dominion in Thursday's only contest. Nicole Michael scored 18 points for the Orange while Erica Morrow contributed 16.

Louisville, a Final Four team from a year ago, defeated Northern Iowa 81-53 in both teams first game on Friday before Syracuse held off Butler, 80-64, in Friday's finale. Monique Reed scored 21 points for Louisville while Morrow notched 29 points for Syracuse with Butler's Melanie Thornton leading her squad with 14 points off the bench.

Saturday's play began with Northern Iowa posting a 65-61 come-from-behind victory over Butler. Kim Wypiszynski led the Panthers with 21 points while Susan Lester led the Bulldog attack with 16 points. Louisville and Old Dominion finished off the event with the Cardinals posting an 82-75 victory. Becky Burke led the U of L with 22 points while Tia Lewis and Shadasia Green each scored 24 for the Monarchs.

SU's Erica Morrow was named the Classic MVP and she was joined on the All-Classic squad by teammate Nicole Michael. Other all-Classic members were Becky Burke and Deseree Byrd of Louisville, Shadasia Green of Old Dominion, UNI's Kim Wypiszynski and Butler's Melanie Thornton.
