South Carolina Wins Cancun Thanksgiving Classic

The University of South Carolina went 2-0 to win the first ever Cancun Thanksgiving Classic Nov. 28-29, 2008 in Cancun, Mexico. The Gamecocks, led by head coach Dawn Staley and tournament MVP Brionna Dickerson won two close games to claim the tournament crown.
UNC-Wilmington opened Classic play with a 53-48 victory over Fordham on Friday before South Carolina posted a 43-34 over Ohio in the nightcap. Brittany Blackwell led UNCW with 18 points in the first game while Dickerson led USC with 15 in the finale.
Fordham recovered in the first game on Saturday and claimed third place with a 55-51 victory over Ohio. Randall Hurst led all scorers with 18 in the victory while Kamille Buckner scored 16 for the Bobcats.
Dickerson, the tournament MVP, paced the Gamecocks with 15 as South Carolina claimed a 56-54 victory over UNCW to win the Classic title. South Carolina erased a three point halftime deficit to move to 3-2 on the year. Blackwell and Greta Luksyte scored 14 points apiece in the loss for the Seahawks.
